Method
 

Preparation
  1. Wash, peel, core, and chop the apples to yield about 8 cups of chopped fruit.
  2. In a large bowl, combine apples with sugar, spices, and lemon juice. Toss until well-coated.
Cooking
  1. Transfer the mixture into the crockpot, spreading it evenly and packing it loosely.
  2. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours, stirring occasionally. Alternatively, cook on high for 4-5 hours for a quicker option.
  3. Once the apples are soft, use an immersion blender to puree to the desired smoothness.
  4. Continue cooking uncovered for an additional hour, stirring frequently until it reaches desired thickness.
Canning and Storing
  1. If gifting, pour hot apple butter into sterilized jars, seal with lids, and process in a water bath.
  2. For personal use, let cool before storing in the fridge.

Notes

Choose apples like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji for a balanced taste. Avoid overcooking to prevent thickening. Personalize by experimenting with spices like cloves or cardamom.
