Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Wet Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange zest
  • 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For Glazing
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh orange juice

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ground cloves, and ground cinnamon.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, followed by the grated orange zest, fresh orange juice, and vanilla extract until incorporated.
  5. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined. The dough will be soft but not sticky.
Baking
  1. Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough and place them on the prepared baking sheet, about two inches apart.
  2. Bake in the preheated oven for about 10-12 minutes or until the edges are golden.
  3. Allow the cookies to cool on a wire rack.
Glazing
  1. Mix powdered sugar with a tablespoon of fresh orange juice until smooth.
  2. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled cookies.

Notes

Use fresh ground spices for the best flavor. Make sure your butter and egg are at room temperature. Don’t overbake; cookies will firm up after cooling.
